Abstract : The Pruett Process was optimized at the Naval Ordnance Station, Indian Head, Maryland, by laboratory reaction, and it was employed on a modified basis in a pilot plant operation to produce 5000 pounds of tetrakis(dimethylamino)ethylene. The program took 13 months to conduct, including laboratory study, equipment installation, and processing. Techniques of pilot processing and modification are described. Initial costs approximated $40 per pound. Costs at the close of the program were close to $10 per pound. Projected costs are $3.36 per pound. Reductions in processing costs are attributable to recovery of reaction processing medium (DMA) and improved efficiency and method of operation. The product material was consistently produced in yields of greater than 60% while the purity generally ran 99.8%+. (Author)
