Abstract : If the usual polymerization of ethylene to lubricating oil is carried out, the resulting oils, apart from having a high degree of purity and a high viscosity index, are characterized by viscosity values between 380 and 460 centistokes at 50C. Using finely distributed nickel as cocatalyst in very small but varying amounts, it was possible to guide this cationic chain reaction in two directions by activation of the Friedel-Crafts catalysts. The degradation reaction, which takes place with far greater velocity by using nickel in the presence of relatively little aluminum chloride, led to considerably smaller molecules and consequently to low-viscosity lubricating oils. With other catalyst ratios, either oils with considerably higher viscosity could be obtained or a corresponding increase in production at about the same oil viscosity, by doubling the ethylene rate, was achieved.
