Abstract : A special study of the health hazards associated with the use of the AN/GVS-3 laser range finder was conducted. After consideration of the irregular laser beam pattern, the great variation in the hazardous range of the device, and the problems associated with the use of optical viewing instruments downrange, it was concluded that the designation of a single hazardous range for firing range safety purposes was not feasible in most test and training situations. The use of backstops to terminate the beam within controlled range areas was recommended. Sources of hazardous reflections were discussed. Specific firing range control procedures were recommended for operations in fixed positions and operations involving personnel in the laser target area. Requirements for laser protective eyewear were provided. (Author)
