Abstract : A prototype variable density electrooptical shutter system utilizing a liquid suspension of herapathite continuously flowing through the shutter has been developed. The system is substantially leakproof, has a lifetime of at least 2,000 hours under laboratory conditions, and opens and closes rapidly. Use of a flowing system provides unique features and overcomes many problems inherent in a nonflowing shutter system. A modified method of preparing herapathite has been developed. Also research on possible alternative materials has resulted in the discovery of one new material, cupric bromide, that acts electrically and optically like herapathite. (Author)
