Abstract : A study was conducted to investigate the feasibility of enhancing illumination flare output by the methods of oxidizer (air) augmentation and solid fuel particle diversion. The study encompassed the modification and testing of fourteen MK-24 pressed flare grains. Test results indicated that the techniques investigated did not produce any measurable increase in either luminous intensity or efficiency. This is postulated to have been caused by removal of part of the flare grain fuel to incorporate changes required for the techniques tested and from modifications in the combustion and light release mechanisms. Conclusions regarding the total effectiveness of enhancement techniques tested were compromised by the small number of tests, the limited test instrumentation and the varying environmental test conditions.
