Abstract : An investigation to determine the feasibility of utilizing vector subtraction as a means of reducing dynamic clutter effects on an operational radar system is discussed. The basic approach taken involved using the RAM radar at White Sands Missile Range to measure the radar cross-section and phase of a moving target in a clutter background and subsequently obtain a set of measurements data representing only the clutter background over the same space envelope traversed by the target. The appropriate data were then processed to establish the applicability of the subtraction technique to both post-mission and real-time clutter reduction. The results obtained indicate that the radar system and clutter stability was sufficient to establish the feasibility of the technique. Data are presented to validate this conclusion along with analyses of the clutter-processing techniques utilized. A specific method of implementing the vector subtraction process into an operational radar system in real-time is discussed in detail. Recommendations for future investigations and specific results and milestones expected from the recommended investigations are also presented. (Author)
