Abstract : Inductive energy storage systems to provide a repetitive energy pulse to a multiple non-linear load consisting of twelve flash lamps are studied and optimized. The delivery of a 52000 joule pulse in 400 microseconds at the rate of 5 pps for a total mission length of 3000 pulses. Design variations are considered over a range from 12 to 64 Kj. Pulse lengths of 250 sec and rate of 10 pps are also included. Superconducting coils as well as liquid nitrogen cooled coils are evaluated. Both solenoidal and toroidal geometries are considered in three configurations: (1) each load type is supplied by a separate secondary winding; (2) each load type is connected to a separate coil; and (3) all loads have the same impedance. Helium solenoid systems are the lightest, regardless of configuration, toroidal configurations are heavier than comparable solenoid configurations, capacitors for pulse shaping (if necessary) comprise a significant fraction of total system weight, and switching system weights and operation are imdependent of coil geometry or cryogen.
