Abstract : Pyrolysis gas chromatography identifies polymers by the composition and concentration of their thermal decomposition products. The pyrolysis may be accomplished by flash-heating or isothermal heating for standard periods of time. The volatile decomposition products are analyzed in packed columns using the appropriate separating phase such as poly(phenyl ether)OS-138. The various separation techniques were evaluated for qualitative reproducibility, quantitative reproducibility, and accuracy. Fingerprinting of polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene-polypropylene copolymer, and (Si(CH3)2) n was described to provide examples. This review was prepared on the basis of references in the literature. (Author)
