Abstract : This report describes the theory and digital implementation used to prepare analysis techniques for study of the transient behavior of air-breathing propulsion systems, with particular emphasis on controllability and control system studies of ducted rockets. The one-dimensional equations of mass and momentum conservation, and an energy relation for unsteady flow with mass addition, combustion, heat transfer, and frictional dissipation, are applied in a method-of-characteristics digital simulation. Logic is prepared to join flow segments with conduction calculations and control functions to simulate complex internal flow systems. Interfaces with external forces and vehicle dynamics are provided so that the behavior of a ducted rocket propulsion system and its control system can be analyzed in a unified study. (Author)
