Abstract : The paper reviews experiments investigating the influence of intense ultrasonic energy on the kinetics of three solid-state processes: (1) precipitation hardening; (2) recrystallization; and (3) grain growth. Complications presented by acoustic heating of ultrasonically irradiated specimens are discussed, and a method for controlling the extent of specimen superheating and for measuring acoustic stress is presented.
