Abstract : The report describes the results of a six months program to experimentally determine the degree of improvement to the state of the art of Q-switched neodymium lasers made possible by the use of 1.06 micron radiation absorbing filters placed within the laser pump cavity. The program experimentally studied the individual energy storage capabilities of individual YAG:Nd rods of dimensions up to 0.75 inch diameter by 4.0 inches long and the energy storage capabilities of multiple rod oscillator-amplifier configurations. The maximum energy storage of a YAG:Nd rod was found to be only a weak function of rod length. This observation forced a study of multiple rod oscillator-amplifier configurations. Finally, YAG:Nd,Lu was compared with YAG:Nd and the former was found to be more efficient when used in an oscillator. The increased efficiency is believed to be due to the superior optical quality of the YAG:Nd,Lu. (Author)
