Abstract : The LIMIT computer program determines the collapse load of an arbitrary solid of revolution such as a thick dome subjected to arbitrary axisymmetric pressure loadings. In addition, approximate stress distribution at collapse is also obtained. The program is based on a unique technique of maximizing the lower bound solution using the linear programming approach. The lower bound solution is obtained employing the lower bound theorem of plasticity. The equilibrium equations are derived by idealizing the arbitrary solid with a finite element model; and the limit analysis problem is formulated as a mathematical programming problem. The nonlinear constraints of the Von Mises Yield Criterion are linearized using a separable programming procedure. This transforms the limit problem to a linear programming problem. The linear programming solution is obtained using a sophisticated computer program, Mathematical Programming System (MPS/360). MPS/360 or a similar linear programming code is an integral part of the LIMIT program. Numerical examples indicate good agreement of computer solutions with analytical results. A special dome option is included in the program which allows the user to input simplified data for special dome configurations. (Author)
