Abstract : The Deep Vehicles Branch of the U. S. Naval Oceanographic Office has employed six manned submersibles on nearly 100 dives for the purpose of developing instrumentation and techniques for oceanographic surveys. Experience has shown that instrument systems have not kept pace with the development of submersible capabilities. Design criteria, recognizing such problems as environment extremes, interfacing, interference, miniaturization and vehicle restraints should be established for effective instrument development. Multi-parameter instrument suites used in submersible surveys show that failures are most commonly related to these design problems. (Author)
