Abstract : A magnetic tape voice recorder was developed for use in military aircraft. Two versions were developed: one for use in fighter aircraft, providing a record only capability; and one for a more universal airborne or portable use providing both record and reproduce capabilities. The two types are compatible through the use of the same tape speed and interchangeable tape cassettes. The design is based on the use of the 'Norelco' type magnetic tape cassette, operated at a tape speed of one-half inch per second, which provides adequate recording time capability. To eliminate the obvious shortcomings of a DC motor and belt or puck capstan drive systems, the recorder has been designed with an AC drive motor and a gear driven capstan. This provides a stable and reliable capstan drive. The recorders are designed with high efficiency circuits to keep the power requirements at a minimum and can be used with an adapter to permit portable operation. In the aircraft, the recorder is designed to fit into a mounting pattern as specified in MS25213. The recorder is retained in the mounting bracket by a latching handle which permits easy removal without the use of tools. (Author)
