Abstract : The U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office is engaged in an environmental research program at ARGUS ISLAND, an oceanographic research tower on Plantagenet Bank, located 22 miles southwest of Bermuda. Plantagenet Bank is a seamount rising to within a nearly uniform 190 feet of the surface. Its dimensions are approximately 5 miles in the north-south direction and 3 miles in the east-west direction. ARGUS tower is approximately 1 mile from the southern edge of the bank in 192 feet of water. Environmental investigations at the tower include current studies, heat budget investigations, and surface and internal wave studies. To determine if the thermal structure over Plantagenet Bank was representative of adjacent deep water, measurements of water temperature were collected on 25 and 26 July 1965 from ARGUS tower and from a nearby deepwater station. This report describes the experiment and compares the thermal structure of water at the tower with that of adjacent deep water.
