Abstract : This program addresses itself to the investigation of isotropic substrates for use in ultrasonic surface wave structures. In addition to amorphous and randomly oriented polycrystalline substrates, ordered polycrystalline materials and certain single crystals are being studied. These additional materials merit study because: (1) There is the possibility of finding ordered polycrystalline materials and certain single crystals which have high piezoelectric coupling for surface waves and yet maintain isotropic properties; (2) Lower loss can be expected in these materials as the operating frequency is increased to near 1 GHz. Versatility can be gained by having materials with low transduction loss and low propagation loss at high frequencies instead of using separate transducer materials on nonpiezoelectric substrates.
