Abstract : Glass strengthening methods were reviewed and the thermal tempering method was chosen for strengthening the Texas Instruments Incorporated No. 1173 (Ge28Se60Sb12) and No. 20(Ge33Se55As12) glasses. A commercial thermal tempering process was set up and demonstrated by tempering a 5 by 10 by 3/8 inch No. 1173 glass sample and a 5 by 7 by 3/8 inch No. 20 glass sample. Production Facilities capable of tempering pieces up to 12 by 24 by 1/2 inch were installed. Flexure tests indicated that strength improvement from 2500 psi to over 6000 psi was achieved. A preliminary evaluation by a scattered laser light stress measuring method indicates a surface compressive stress of 10,000 psi was achieved in the thermally tempered glass samples. Thermally induced stresses were determined for the two glasses by calculation and thermal endurance tests were run. Exhibit samples were prepared and delivered.
