Abstract : A unique multiple frequency reflectometry system capable of rapid measurements of a target's complex spectral signature at ten discrete harmonically related frequencies, fo(fo) 10fo, is described. The design and instrumentation of the system is discussed and initial estimates of the amplitude and phase measurement accuracy and system linearity are given. The incorporation of a small 'instrumentation computer' into the system and subsequent feasibility of generating real time radar target signature waveforms from the measured data is described. Initial measured data and signature waveforms illustrative of present system capabilities are presented for a set of spherical targets. This data indicates that an accuracy of plus or minus 0.5 dB in amplitude and plus or minus 5 degrees in phase has been achieved at all frequencies except 11 GHz and it is anticipated that additional effort will yield comparable accuracy at this frequency. With the aid of this system, a measured target ramp response waveform for one aspect can now be generated in less than one hour. Since the ramp response contains the crucial data needed for target discrimination, this will greatly facilitate studies to develop automated target recognition processes. The handicap caused by the lack of data which has impeded the testing of such processes in the past should be eliminated in the immediate future. (Author)
