Abstract : A major problem area confronting all oceanographic buoy systems is the electromechanical interface connecting the sensor/strain cable with the buoy electronics. The report documents the design criteria, sea test, and evaluation of a successful prototype umbilical link for a NOMAD (Navy Oceanographic and Meteorologic Automatic Device) buoy. The buoy was implanted in late August 1968, 7 miles east of Ocean City, Maryland, in 70 feet of water; test duration was approximately 3 months. (Author)
