Abstract : A prototype of one of the three rows of a special purpose digital differential analyzer to solve a 3 x 3 direction cosine matrix was built and tested. The prototype was built with Fairchild 9000 series TTL integrated circuits. The purpose of the prototype was to verify that the design will adequately solve the coordinate transformation algorithms and is suitable for a custom large scale integrated chip construction approach. Emphasis on partitioning was for the most logic per card with the smallest amount of different type cards for greater interchangeability. Testing was progressive to simplify isolation and correction of design and assembly problems. The cards were given continuity and functional checks, and then by use of the PERSHING ground computer (D-84) for controls, the loop was gradually closed on the matrix elements until the prototype performed like a computer. A unique test method was used to simulate pitch programs about each axis. The inertial inputs were generated internally in the digital differential analyzer and the D-84 controlled the test modes. Each row in the digital differential analyzer computes independently, so by selective presets and inertial input simulation, it was possible to test the equivalent of a complete computer using the prototype of one row. The unique method of testing and the results presented in this report show that this mechanization is adequate to solve the algorithms and is suitable for a custom large scale integrated chip construction method.
