Abstract : Experimental Hugoniot data on a densely packed hafnium titanate material have been obtained. The hafnium titanate was shocked to pressures up to 150 kilobars using gas gun techniques and a least squares fit to the data was performed to obtain the Hugoniot equation of state. The average initial density of the hafnium titanate tested was 7.226 g/cu cm, which corresponded to a calculated porosity of 4.7 percent. The results of the dynamic equation-of-state measurements were compared with a high-pressure extrapolation of ultrasonic measurements made of the variation of bulk modulus with pressure up to 10 kilobars. The predicted high-pressure equation of state from ultrasonic measurements was in significant disagreement with the dynamic gas gun data indicating that the porosity and microstructure of hafnium titanate seriously effect Hugoniot predictions by current ultrasonic techniques.
