Abstract : The critical loadings at failure of a unidirectional fibrous composite under any oblique loading are the most important results obtained in this work. For this purpose the von Mises energy criterion was applied to the components of the composite. Debonding failures at the interfaces were also considered. Other results of this research included composite elastic engineering constants in any angular direction as a function of fiber density and component properties. Diagrams are presented which exhibit the critical loading and the elastic coefficients of a series of composites as a function of the loading directions, component materials constants, and geometry. The fundamentals to this work are based on the micromechanical stress fields in the fibers and in the matrix. (Author-PL)
