Abstract : After a brief introduction on Belgium's economy and educational system, a visit to the Plasma Physics Laboratory of the Royal Military Academy and to the Faculty of Science of the Free University of Brussels is described. At the RMA, Vandenplas and Messiaen form an excellent theoretical and experimental team on electron waves and resonances in bounded plasmas. Their most recent achievement is a complete experimental and theoretical account of the eigenmodes of a spherical cavity filled with plasma at low and high incident powers. They have replaced the spherical cavity with a cylindrical plasma column and observed the interesting phenomenon of plasma ejection. At FUB, Balescu and Prigogine direct a group of sixty theoreticians doing outstanding work in statistical physics. Balescu is writing another graduate textbook on non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. He is tackling the difficult problem of strong turbulence with considerable promise of success using the diagram technique of the Belgian school. He is also working on the kinetic theory of plasmas with particular emphasis on 'quasi-particles.' (Author)
