Abstract : Selection of new polymers as candidate binder materials is based on their thermal and oxidative stability, toughness, adhesive properties, and ease of handling. Polybenzothiazole (PBT) was chosen from among several candidates for investigation as a binder for solid film lubricant formulations. A description of the polymer, its structure and properties is given. Procedures for developing solid lubricant formulations and the results obtained are presented. Several formulations are described which have potential for improved performance. One formulation, MoS2+Sb2O3+PBT, was selected for detailed study. Evaluation of friction and wear properties in several test devices are discussed. Improved performance is demonstrated at 500F and higher compared to the performance exhibited by commercially available films. (Author)
