Abstract : The theory of dislocations in anisotropic elastic media is outlined. The conditions necessary for an analytic solution are given. It is shown that the elastic properties of a dislocation in a hexagonal crystal can always be determined analytically; the hexagonal structure is the only crystal structure for which a complete analytic solution is possible. Analytical expressions are derived for the displacement field, stress field, and energy of a dislocation of arbitrary orientation and arbitrary Burgers vector in a hexagonal crystal. (Author)
