Abstract : This project has been engaged in the development of test procedures which are necessary for the scientific development, evaluation, and acceptance of dynamic specifications on machine tools. Over the course of the program, a number of large three spindle profile milling machines and four axis machining centers were investigated, and the pertinent data presented in statistical form for evaluation. This data constitutes a reliable base from which it is now possible to more clearly propose the development of realistic dynamic specifications. The methods and procedures employed in the test program were found to be adequate for rapid machine evaluation and sufficiently accurate to form the basis for specifications. A two phase program involving the merger of cutting tests and frequency response tests, to be ultimately replaced by acceptance tests based on frequency response measurements, is recommended. Special purpose data acquisition units specifically designed for acceptance testing are suggested. (Author)
