Abstract : Electromagnetic wave propagation and power transport in a waveguide, consisting of an arbitrarily periodic grating and a plane conductor above, and parallel to, the grating, filled with a linear, source-free medium are investigated. A small argument approximation for a specific periodic grating is used to obtain the field solutions and dispersion characteristics for transverse magnetic and transverse electric waves. Numerical results are given and dispersion relations are plotted for both TM and TE waves for various normalized waveguide heights and normalized grating depths. Stop bands and pass bands of propagation exist, as expected, in both modes of propagation, and their relative width and position vary according to the selection of the waveguide parameters. Numerical results are valid only for small values of normalized grating depth due to the small argument approximation used. (Author)
