Abstract : Preliminary assessment of the relative toxicity of proposed louse toxicant OMS-868, 0,0-dimethyl-0-(3-chloro-4-N,N-diethyl sulfamoylphenyl) phosphorothionate, was conducted using laboratory animals. The technical grade compound did not produce primary irritation when applied to the intact or abraded skin of rabbits. Data obtained from 21 days of continuous application of either technical grade chemical or a 1 percent formulation in pyrax powder to intact and abraded rabbit skin failed to indicate an unusual degree of hazard. However, skin sensitization studies produced a positive response in 3 of 10 guinea pigs in two separate tests. It is recommended that OMS-868 formulated as a 1 percent dust in pyrax powder, not be approved for sleeve testing, under the provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Department of the Army, Office of the Surgeon General; the Armed Forces Pest Control Board; and the US Department of Agriculture, until such time as the potential for skin sensitization in humans has been examined by appropriate tests. In the event the compound is shown not to produce a skin sensitization reaction, it is recommended that OMS-868 formulated as a 1 percent dust in pyrax powder be approved for sleeve testing under the provision of the Memorandum of Understanding.
