Abstract : Electrodeposited hard and soft nickel on composites and aluminum have proven far superior to any other coating material for erosion resistance where radar transmission is not a requirement. The substrate material determined the minimum required thickness of electrodeposited nickel. Composites required a 9 mil coating thickness for extended protection in the rain environment while aluminum required only 3 mils. Thicker coatings of nickel will be required for sand erosion protection. Electroforming and adhesively bonding nickel to a composite substrate may offer a means of improving erosion.
