Abstract : The low tensile strength of brittle materials often is attributed to surface or internal flaws. Failure criteria for these materials have been proposed using 'ideal' internal flaw models. New failure criteria are presented here for a spherical cavity embedded in an infinite elastic medium and subjected to biaxial stresses at infinity. These criteria have several interesting features which suggest advantages over plane stress or strain flaw models. (Author)
