Abstract : The structural safety of the MACV Annex building, Ton Son Nhut, Republic of Vietnam, was evaluated from full-scale load tests. The MACV Annex is a reinforced concrete structure, built by a Chinese contractor using Vietnamese labor and construction techniques. Construction consists of two-way slabs on a rectangular mesh of reinforced concrete beams framing into concrete girders supported by concrete columns. Seventeen different load tests were applied to the second and third floors of two bays. Loads were applied by hydraulic rams which reacted against water-filled Navy pontoons setting on the first floor. Instrumentation included deflections at 25 locations and 46 strain measurements on slabs, beams, girders, columns, and bar joints. (Author)
