Abstract : Geological and geophysical evaluations were made of 11 sites in The Three Peaks Mountain Range area near Cedar City, Utah. Five of the sites were eliminated on the basis of these evaluations. Borings were made at the six remaining sites from which the two best sites were selected based on such factors as surface and subsurface jointing, rock strength, general site configuration, and other factors. Site 2 was selected for three surface blast experiments and Site 6 for a subsurface blast experiment of the Mine Shaft Series. This report describes and documents the data used in evaluating all sites. It summarizes data on petrography, rock alteration, surface exposures, geologic structure, frequency and type of surface and subsurface jointing, joint fillings, effective porosity based on joint openings, rock hardness and strength, and related geologic features. It describes in special detail the geologic situation in the vicinity of ground zero of each blast experiment. It summarizes postshot observations of geologic pertinence. Composite logs of borings, including field rock property data, are presented in Appendix A; time versus distance seismic plots and subsurface profiles based on these plots are presented in Appendix B.
