Abstract : The Optical Features Extraction Techniques Program is an extension of previous work (Automatic IR Pattern Recognition Techniques) sponsored by the Air Force. The purpose of these analytical and experimental efforts has been to achieve automated three-dimensional identification of aerospace vehicles. Multi-prototype classification of three-dimensional targets is based on two-dimensional slope-code signatures. The relative invariance of the slope-code signatures over aspect angles up to 15 degrees is demonstrated. Spatial or three-dimensional invariants, while identified, are shown to be more difficult to implement. Parallel pattern-abstraction methods are developed as the initial step of a longer range but promising alternate approach. (Author)
