Abstract : Hydrodynamic data were obtained for two towlines trailed at the cable critical angle. These data, combined with that obtained by other investigators, were analyzed for the purpose of refining the form of the hydrodynamic loading functions for tows at low critical angles. In addition, the athwartship vibration characteristics were measured to provide information regarding the effect of the towing angle on the fundamental (Strouhal) driving frequency. To aid in the analysis, a new formulation for the hydrodynamic loading functions was developed based on the physical requirements for oddness or evenness of the terms of a Fourier expansion, with the cable inclination angle as the primary variable. This form preserves the assumption that the hydrodynamic loading functions are describable in terms of the cable angle. (Author)
