Abstract : Propellant-grade MMH was stored in contact with various metal surfaces at 100C for seven days, and the observed stability order was Al about equal to Ti about equal to Cr < Fe < Mo < Ni. The degrees of decomposition due to metal surface ranged from essentially zero for Al, Ti, and Cr to about 5% for Ni under these conditions. In an experiment conducted at 150C for up to 356 hours, propellant-grade MMH samples appeared to be as stable as samples of purified material. Thus the impurities present in propellant-grade MMH have little effect on thermal stability, at least under our conditions. In studies carried out at 175C on purified material in both the vapor and liquid phases and in which the amount of Pyrex surface was varied, the rate of MMH decomposition was found to be roughly first order in surface area and zero order in MMH itself. A mechanistic model fitting such behavior is MMH + S = S.MMH to products in which S represents an active surface site and where the initial equilibrium lies to the right. (Author)
