Abstract : The objective of the project was to study the resolution capability of television systems in identifying details from line maps and picto-maps. Experiments were conducted on a closed-circuit, 525-line, black-and-white TV system. The experiments were carefully designed so that the results can be used to estimate the potential capability of the more advanced, high-resolution system. The resolution, photometric distortion and geometric distortions were calibrated by both conventional and non-conventional methods. Resolution tests were conducted to establish the minimum resolution requirement for distinguishing letter symbols and lines of standard colors and thickness. Resolution requirements for standard map symbols were evaluated directly on TV displays of representative samples of line maps and picto-maps. (Author)
