Abstract : The tactical data obtained during submarine ASW exercise is analyzed and evaluated, particularly to determine the relative positions of all participants throughout the exercise. The reliability of any conclusions drawn by such an evaluation is based upon an ability to reconstruct the relative movements of the units involved during periods of particular interest. During post-exercise reconstruction efforts, problems often arise due to submarine sensors providing primarily heading, speed, and bearing information only, with occasional navigation position information provided. These problems are further compounded because this information is frequently in error. A Pilot Exercise Reconstruction Facility, employing a digital computer system, has been established for the purpose of processing and reconstructing the data obtained from submarine ASW exercises. This system consists of a semiautomated reconstruction program using the Automatic Data Collection System (AUTODATA), derived as part of the Fleet ASW Data Analysis Program (FADAP), supplemented by manually recorded exercise data (exercise narratives, navigational information, etc). Its purpose is to enable the reconstruction analysis to efficiently perform exercise reconstruction and analysis tasks to insure the validity and reliability of submarine ASW data. This document serves to outline step-by-step procedures for using the Pilot Reconstruction Facility to process, reconstruct, and analyze complete submarine ASW exercises.
