Abstract : Time-to-passivation studies have been made on the zinc electrode in a range of KOH solutions. The time range was milliseconds and seconds. Attempts to interpret these results in terms of the rate at which the charge transfer product dissolves in the electrolyte encounter theoretical difficulties. Even at low times-to-passivation, the electrode process appears to be under diffusion control indicating that the rate of dissolution of the charge transfer product is not a limiting factor. Limiting diffusion currents have been measured in 1 to 13.4 M KOH and over a temperature range of -33 to 44C. The diffusion coefficients of the zinate ion have been measured polarographically in 1 to 10 M KOH and over a temperature range of -30 to 45C. (Author)
