Abstract : A visual control (VISCON) system for target presentation was developed and is presently being used on operations. The system incorporates a TV camera installed in a drone aircraft to simulate a pilot's visual field of view for display on a TV monitor located at a remote ground control station. Preliminary feasibility testing was conducted in 1966 and, beginning in 1967, tests were conducted using BQM-34A and QF-9J target aircraft equipped with VISCON systems installed in the aircraft and/or in a pod mounted on the aircraft. The tests demonstrated that pilots with minimum drone-control experience can control drone aircraft with the VISCON system much more easily and accurately than they can with a drone-control system that does not include a TV display. The VISCON system, which permits complex and realistic target presentations, particularly at low altitudes, also demonstrated simplified operational techniques that require less manpower and less training. The resulting monetary savings will more than offset the cost of the airborne TV equipment. Subsequent to the development of VISCON, an aircraft performance information (API) system, in which airspeed, RPM, and other aircraft functions can also be displayed on the TV monitor, was developed for use with VISCON.
