Abstract : The purpose of the study is twofold: (a) develop criteria, formulas, and techniques for selecting items to be shipped overseas routinely by air; and (b) determine the need for and feasibility of an Army intra-CONUS DEDICATED LOGISTICS AIR TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM. The study investigates the possibility that routine air shipment offers the Army a potential for substantial cost avoidances in terms of inventory investment and associated holding costs for both the piepline segment and overseas stock levels. The degree of cost avoidances appears to be dependent upon and very sensitive to Military Air Lift Command air linehaul rates. The study finds that a dedicated CONUS air logistics transportation system for the Army is both feasible and desirable, and that use of the existing USAF LogAir System offers effective means for intra-CONUS air movement between Army installations.
