Abstract : This memorandum, which is based on equations and ideas coming mostly from the National Institute of Oceanography of the United Kingdom, describes a FORTRAN program to calculate the rms displacement of the sea surface from the mean sea level, the average zerocrossing period of the random surface, and some quantities related to the spectral width. The input requires the following four quantities coming from a tenminute record of surface height as a function of time at a point: the number of positive zerocrossings, the number of positive crests, the largest crest, and the largest trough.
