Abstract : The report describes a two-phase program to develop a FREM (Focus Radiant-Energy Motion) sensor. The program consisted of study and experimentation efforts to develop a single sensor that would provide automatic sensing and control of image intensity, image motion, and image focus for high-acuity cameras. The tasks were to fabricate, install, and evaluate the FREM sensor with a KS-25 camera and an ART-21 stabilized mount. A new concept was developed for optimizing the photographic records of aerial cameras based on maximizing the scene detail by sensing the derivative energy of the scene through correlation techniques. Sharpness of the autocorrelation function is equivalent to the normalized derivative energy. (Author)
