Abstract : The condensation coefficients of C2 and C3, the high temperature vapor species of carbon, were determined by using the isotopic exchange technique and a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Two powder compacts of C12(s) and C13(s) were heated to 2663K in a tungsten Knudsen cell. Exchange reactions were studied by analyzing the vapor effusing from the Knudsen cell by a Time-of-Flight mass spectrometer. The condensation coefficient beta2 of C2 was evaluated from the steady-state concentration of C12C13(g). An expression relating the steady-state concentration of (C2(12)C(13)(g)+C(12)C2(13)(g)) and the condensation coefficient beta3 of C3 was derived. The expression was used to evaluate beta3. (Author)
