Abstract : A special feature of MILOC 66 was an area survey (Phase D) of a 100 n.mi radius circle around the Ocean Weather Station (OWS) JULIET (position: 52 deg 30 min N, 20 deg W). The participating ships sailed on courses that formed approximate radii of the circle and were close enough to each other to allow them to maintain radar contact. During the survey the ships measured the temperature structure down to about 200 m by lowering mechanical bathythermographs (BTs) at preset times. In addition, routine meteorological data were taken with each BT dip and the surface current were measured every two hours. The bathymetry was continuously recorded by all ships throughout the survey.
