Abstract : Simple displacement reactions in the solid state are considered with the purpose of predicting the morphology and kinetics of reaction from a knowledge of pertinent thermodynamic and diffusion quantities. The theoretical predications are substantiated by experimental observations for five reactive couples at 1000C:ni/Cu2O, Co/Cu2O, Co/NiO, Fe/Cu2O, and Fe/NiO. Displacement reactions are classified into series and parallel arrangements of product phases, with two modifications (lamellar and interwoven product morphology) occurring within the parallel arrangement. Parabolic kinetics for the growth of the product phases were observed for each couple. The magnitude of the parabolic rate constants for the couples exhibiting the series arrangement were in agreement with calculations. The Co/NiO and Fe/NiO couples resulted in a parallel arrangment in which both the product metal and oxide were continuous and interwoven. A technique for effecting the morphology of products which results for a reactive couple is discussed. (Author)
