Abstract : The SRI Expanded Ring Test was used to determine the strength characteristics of lead zirconate--lead titanate sonar transducer rings under various test conditions. Two lots of nominally identical rings were supplied by two different manufacturers. It was found that one lot is considerably stronger than the other under all experimental conditions. The effect of static stress on the ultimate strength of lead zirconate-lead titanate materials was studied by preloading the rings for a predetermined length of time to various stress levels. It was determined that delayed fracture occurs in both materials, but exposure to static loads does not significantly alter the average strength of the surviving rings. Test results were evaluated by various statistical methods, and the feasibility of a proof test for the elimination of substandard rings is discussed. (Author)
