Abstract : The primary purpose of this experimental program was to evaluate an electronic instantaneous field-of-view reduction (IFOV) technique applied to a forward looking infrared reconnaissance (FLIR) sensor. To achieve this end numerous measurements were required. Initially a corrected Bouwers primary optical system was evaluated. This evaluation consisted of measurement of the field of view, spherical and chromatic aberrations, and image plane curvature of this system. The description and results of these measurements are reported. The measurement of the secondary lens magnifications and the complete optical system alignment procedure are also reported. The final optical consideration in this report is the measurement of the modulation transfer function (MTF) of a system. A discussion of MTF measurement techniques is given and the final system measurements are included. Additional information included in this report includes test data on various detectors evaluated in the course of the program, evaluation and data on the coder used for the final system tests. The final IFOV improvement tests results are presented and analyzed. Attributes and deficiencies of this IFOV improvement technique as applied to FLIR systems is discussed.
