Abstract : In a study involving scale models of the DD 710, DD 931, and CVA 31 type ships, the resistive-loading technique (attaching the resistive elements at various places on the antenna, to alter the currents on it and thus change the input impedance) was found to be effective in matching the antenna to the multicoupler. Values of apex loading in the range of 100-1000 ohms reduced the gain of the antenna to an unacceptable level, even though VSWR levels were improved; high values of resistance loading (+20 kilohms) produced no significant change from the no-load case; values in the range of 10 kilohms can result in improved radiation patterns and impedance plots. Resistive-loaded wires can damp currents on parasitically excited ship structures and thus result in improved VSWR and radiation patterns, with negligible power loss. (Author)
