Abstract : The report is the result of a study to determine the competitiveness of diffusion bonded titanium structural components in comparison with the same components fabricated from titanium by conventional processes. The F-4E structure was surveyed to identify components which could be fabricated from titanium with weight savings utilizing conventional processes. Several components were selected for weight and cost analyses, with comparisons of component designs fabricated from the current F-4E material and titanium, steel, and boron/epoxy as applicable. Comparisons were made between diffusion bonded titanium components and components fabricated from titanium by conventional processes. The results of these comparisons were used to establish guidelines for selecting titanium components of advanced aircraft which have the greatest potential to be competitively fabricated with diffusion bonding.
