Abstract : An engineering test was conducted on the tip-off compensating rocket for the OV-1 Mohawk escape system. The purpose of the test was to determine that the rocket satisfies the appropriate requirements of the Army. The test was conducted by the contractor and consisted of safety, environmental, structural, and performance phases. A total of 128 rockets were function tested at temperatures of from -65F to 160F. The statistical tolerance limits for the performance parameters of the rockets were determined based on a 99.7% reliability at the 95% confidence level. The calculated values for total impulse ranged from 357 to 424 ibf-sec and all rockets functioned. The engineering of the rocket is adequate and it met all the criteria, which were included in the test design, with one exception. The rocket is safe to use providing standard operating procedures for propellant actuated devices are followed. (Author)
